Darrick wood - God - Dieu

On our regular walks from Darrick wood to Downe where Charles Darwin once lived I often contemplate the implications of his 1859 publication “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection”. His book is difficult reading but for me it is much more important than the Bible I have no copy of the Bible on my bookshelf, but I have read it 3 times at school. For me the Bible, is not the word of a god or a supernatural entity.

Darwin’s work explains the means by which humans evolved. Life has existed on the planet for at least 3 billion years and in that time plants, animals and micro-organism have evolved to live successfully within a constantly changing environment.

Darwin realised that human beings descended from ape-like ancestors. We are in fact part of the ape family along with gibbons, chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans. The process of evolution can be described without the intervention of a supernatural being. Human beings are not superior creatures because a supernatural being conferred superiority upon them.

Darwin’s theory changed the western world as we no longer required belief in God to explain our existence, and from 1859 onwards the power of religion and the church diminished considerably.
I cannot see that there is any evidence for a supernatural being whatsoever. Likewise, I can see no evidence for the existence of a heaven or hell. This means that I must live my life upon my own terms and not on the terms of a bible or good book. Further, this means that there is no absolute right or wrong, right and wrong are therefore human value judgements. How can one religious belief be right another be wrong? According to my view all religious beliefs are wrong, and they do not provide an answer to the human condition. There is no god to reward you for good behaviour or punish you for bad. You will not be saved from Covid -19 or condemned to be killed by it by a god. You could have good luck or bad luck and none of this relies upon a supernatural being.

My god is the universe itself and there is no need to worship it as I am part of it. Why worship yourself?

How the universe came into existence without the intervention of a supernatural being is a mystery and will probably always be a mystery. One scientist has proposed some sort of answer - Laurence Krauss with his book “A Universe from Nothing”.

Au cours de nos promenades régulières de Darrick Wood à Downe, où Charles Darwin a vécu, j’envisage souvent les conséquences de sa publication de 1859 intitulée « On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection ». Son livre est difficile à lire, mais pour moi il est beaucoup plus important que la Bible, je n’ai pas de copie de la Bible sur mon rayonnage, mais je l’ai lu 3 fois à l’école. Pour moi, la Bible n’est pas la parole d’un dieu ou d’une entité surnaturelle.

Le travail de Darwin explique les moyens par lesquels les humains ont évolué. La vie existe sur la planète depuis au moins 3 milliards d’années et à cette époque, les plantes, les animaux et les micro-organismes ont évolué pour vivre avec succès dans un environnement en constante évolution.

Darwin réalisa que les êtres humains descendaient d’ancêtres simiens. Nous faisons en effet partie de la famille des singes avec les gibbons, les chimpanzés, les gorilles, les bonobos et les orangs-outans. Le processus de l’évolution peut être décrit sans l’intervention d’un être surnaturel. Les êtres humains ne sont pas des créatures supérieures parce qu’un être surnaturel leur a conféré une supériorité.

La théorie de Darwin a changé le monde occidental car nous n’avions plus besoin de croire en Dieu pour expliquer notre existence, et à partir de 1859 le pouvoir de la religion et de l’église a considérablement diminué.

Je ne vois aucune preuve pour un être surnaturel. De même, je ne vois aucune preuve pour l’existence d’un paradis ou d’un enfer. Cela signifie que je dois vivre ma vie selon mes propres termes et non selon les termes d’une bible ou d’un bon livre. En outre, cela signifie qu’il n’y a pas de bien absolu ou de mal, le bien et le mal sont donc des jugements de valeur humaine. Comment une croyance religieuse peut-elle être juste et une autre fausse ? Selon moi, toutes les croyances religieuses sont fausses, et elles ne fournissent pas de réponse à la condition humaine. Il n’y a pas de dieu pour vous récompenser pour votre bonne conduite ou vous punir pour le mal. Vous ne serez pas sauvé de Covid -19 ou condamné à être tué par lui par un dieu. Vous pourriez avoir de la chance ou de la malchance et rien de tout cela ne dépend d’un être surnaturel.

Mon dieu est l’univers lui-même et il n’y a pas besoin de l’adorer car j’en fais partie. Pourquoi vous adorer vous-même ?

Comment l’univers est né sans l’intervention d’un être surnaturel est un mystère et sera probablement toujours un mystère. Un scientifique a proposé une sorte de réponse - Laurence Krauss avec son livre « A Universe from Nothing ».

Spontaneity

Thoughts in Darrick Wood by Trevor Morgan 23 June 2020 (traduction française ci-dessous) For me, a social life needs some spontaneity. I like to walk in Darrick Wood whenever I feel like it. Sometimes, my wife and I decide to walk through the woods but then continue to the village of Downe. In Downe, we often used to stop in the “Queen’s Head” pub and drink a pint of the best kept beer in London and have lunch. This was great, but these days it seems so far away. On 4th of July the government is proposing that pubs should be allowed to re-open under social distancing rules. It looks like we will be asked to book our slot in the pub in advance. This means strolling to a timetable; none of the spontaneity, of going for a long walk in the country and stopping off for a drink, will remain. I am in two minds about this. Yes, the economy needs to be protected as should pub life, but does this mean that I must book in for a pint? Booking in is ok to go to a restaurant for a formal meal b...
