Of course, Darrick Wood is a microcosm of the world in general. It is managed by people to achieve a form of dynamic equilibrium. In recent years doing nothing for a while has become a tactic to improve the incidence of wildlife. The meadows have been left to grow and are now only cut late in the season. The meadows do not look so manicured, but the insects are multiplying and providing more food for the birds and small mammals. Constant human intervention is not always the best way to manage a natural environment.

My thoughts turn to James Lovelock’s Gaia theory. Unproven, yet, but it intrigues me. Lovelock’s view is that the Earth is a gigantic living and ecological system which constantly maintains itself in a state of dynamic equilibrium. It does this without forethought, intention, kindness or malice. The geologic and ecologic systems interact with one another to hold the system in balance.

His view is that to thrive the living world needs to maintain itself at a rather cooler temperature than we have now, or which is predicted for the future. In order to maintain its dynamic equilibrium, the planet will have to eliminate the agent which is causing global temperatures to rise.

Bien sûr, Darrick Wood est un microcosme du monde en général. Il est géré par les gens pour atteindre une forme d’équilibre dynamique. Au cours des dernières années, ne rien faire pendant un certain temps est devenu une tactique pour améliorer l’incidence de la faune. Les prairies ont été laissées à pousser et ne sont maintenant coupées qu’à la fin de la saison. Les prairies n’ont pas l’air si bien entretenues, mais les insectes se multiplient et fournissent plus de nourriture aux oiseaux et aux petits mammifères. L’intervention humaine constante n’est pas toujours la meilleure façon de gérer un environnement naturel.

Mes pensées se tournent vers la théorie de Gaia de James Lovelock. Non prouvée, mais elle m’intrigue. Le point de vue de Lovelock est que la Terre est un gigantesque système vivant et écologique qui se maintient constamment dans un état d’équilibre dynamique. Il le fait sans préméditation, intention, gentillesse ou malice. Les systèmes géologiques et écologiques interagissent les uns avec les autres pour maintenir l’équilibre du système.

Son point de vue est que pour prospérer le monde vivant doit se maintenir à une température plutôt plus fraîche que celle que nous avons maintenant, ou qui est prévue pour l’avenir. Pour maintenir son équilibre dynamique, la planète devra éliminer l’agent qui fait monter les températures mondiales.

Spontaneity

Thoughts in Darrick Wood by Trevor Morgan 23 June 2020 (traduction française ci-dessous) For me, a social life needs some spontaneity. I like to walk in Darrick Wood whenever I feel like it. Sometimes, my wife and I decide to walk through the woods but then continue to the village of Downe. In Downe, we often used to stop in the “Queen’s Head” pub and drink a pint of the best kept beer in London and have lunch. This was great, but these days it seems so far away. On 4th of July the government is proposing that pubs should be allowed to re-open under social distancing rules. It looks like we will be asked to book our slot in the pub in advance. This means strolling to a timetable; none of the spontaneity, of going for a long walk in the country and stopping off for a drink, will remain. I am in two minds about this.
