Thoughts in Darrick Wood by Trevor Morgan 23 March 2020 (traduction française ci-dessous)

Darrick and Newstead woods occupy 25 hectares, and a lot of this land is meadow. There are few places where you can be entirely surrounded by woodland. When I enter these small areas, I start to imagine that I am in a real forest. I imagine that the woods are still populated with wolves, bears, wild cats or even a lynx. They could be behind every tree. I soon awake from my daydreams when I hear the sound of the traffic on the A21 or the noise of a helicopter heading towards Biggin Hill.

But hey, what’s that? It’s a domesticated wolf and off the lead! The dog descended from the wolf; it is in fact the same species - Canis lupus.

That fearless moggie approaching me is the same species as the wild cat – Felis sylvestris.

The genes of the wolf and wild cat live on because they are useful to humans. It’s a pity about the brown bear and the lynx and the stork and the beaver: we have killed all of them.

Les bois de Darrick et de Newstead occupent 25 hectares, et une grande partie de cette terre est une prairie. Il y a peu d’endroits où vous pouvez être entièrement entouré par des bois. Quand j’y entre, je commence à imaginer que je suis dans une vraie forêt. J’imagine que les bois sont encore peuplés de loups, d’ours, de chats sauvages ou même d’un lynx. Ces animaux pourraient être derrière chaque arbre. Je me réveille bientôt de mes rêveries quand j’entends la circulation sur la A21 ou le bruit d’un hélicoptère se dirigeant vers Biggin Hill.

Mais hein, qu’est-ce que c’est ? C’est un loup domestiqué sans laisse. Le chien descendit du loup ; c’est en fait la même espèce - Canis lupus.

Ce matou intrépide qui m’approche est la même espèce que le chat sauvage - Felis sylvestris.

Les gènes du loup et du chat sauvage perdurent car ils sont utiles aux humains. C’est dommage pour l’ours brun, le lynx, la cigogne et le castor : nous les avons tous tués.

Spontaneity

Thoughts in Darrick Wood by Trevor Morgan 23 June 2020 (traduction française ci-dessous) For me, a social life needs some spontaneity. I like to walk in Darrick Wood whenever I feel like it. Sometimes, my wife and I decide to walk through the woods but then continue to the village of Downe. In Downe, we often used to stop in the “Queen’s Head” pub and drink a pint of the best kept beer in London and have lunch. This was great, but these days it seems so far away. On 4th of July the government is proposing that pubs should be allowed to re-open under social distancing rules. It looks like we will be asked to book our slot in the pub in advance. This means strolling to a timetable; none of the spontaneity, of going for a long walk in the country and stopping off for a drink, will remain. I am in two minds about this. Yes, the economy needs to be protected as should pub life, but does this mean that I must book in for a pint? Booking in is ok to go to a restaurant for a formal meal b...
