Light pollution -La pollution lumineuse

A few years ago, we were in the garden on a clear
night trying to find the Andromeda Galaxy, it was impossible to find it because
of the light pollution as we did not know exactly where it was. When I was a lad growing up in Pembrokeshire,
we had really dark skies, and I could find it when my father pointed it out to
me. To the naked eye the galaxy is like a nebulous haze in the sky, near the Great
Square of Pegasus asterism. It is larger than the moon, if you can see it.
The galaxy is more than 2 million light years away.
The light that you can see from the galaxy started travelling towards us well before
modern man appeared on the scene.
We went up to Darrick wood, where the skies were
considerably darker, with a pair of binoculars. In the meadow we looked up into
the sky and we were easily able to pick out the asterism of the Great Square of
Pegasus and “star-hop” from there to find the region of space where the galaxy
should be. Hey presto, we found it and it appeared in the sky as a nebulous
patch of light with a much greater diameter than the moon.
My mind was wandering again, and I found myself
wondering if there was intelligent life on a planet orbiting a star in the
Andromeda Galaxy. Is there a self-aware and intelligent being looking at the Milky
Way? I raised my hand in salutation and waved.
When the photons get to their planet their species would
have changed out of all recognition or even could have become extinct.
The same could happen to us.

Il y a quelques années, nous étions dans le jardin par
une nuit claire en essayant de trouver la galaxie d’Andromède, il était impossible
de la trouver en raison de la pollution lumineuse que nous ne savions pas exactement
où elle était. Quand j’étais un garçon qui grandissait en Pembrokeshire, nous avions
un ciel très sombre, et je pouvais le trouver quand mon père me l’a signalé. À l’œil
nu, la galaxie est comme une brume nébuleuse dans le ciel, près de l’astérisme du
Grand Carré de Pégase. Elle est plus grand que la lune, si on peut la voir.
La galaxie est à plus de 2 millions d’années-lumière. La
lumière que vous pouvez voir de la galaxie a commencé à voyager vers nous bien avant
l’homme moderne est apparu sur la scène.
Nous sommes allés
jusqu’au bois de Darrick, où le ciel était considérablement plus sombre, avec une
paire de jumelles. Dans la prairie, nous avons levé les yeux vers le ciel et nous
avons été facilement en mesure de reconnaître le Grand Carré de Pégase et "star-hop"
ou “de repère en repère” à partir
de là pour trouver la région de l’espace où la galaxie devrait être. Et hop, nous
l’avons trouvé et il est apparu dans le ciel comme une brume nébuleuse de la lumière
avec un diamètre beaucoup plus grand que la lune.
Mon esprit errait à nouveau, et
je me suis demandé s’il y avait une vie intelligente sur une planète en orbite
autour d’une étoile dans la galaxie d’Andromède. Y a-t-il un être conscient de soi
et intelligent qui regarde la Voie lactée ? J’ai levé la main en salutation et fait
signe. Lorsque les photons arrivent sur leur planète, leur espèce aurait changé
de toute reconnaissance ou aurait même pu disparaître.
La même chose pourrait nous arriver.
